Science & Origin
Discover the history, research, and science behind PSYCH-K® — and why it works.
ABOUT PSYCH-K®
1988 — ORIGIN
PSYCH-K® was created by Robert M. Williams, M.A. — a psychotherapist who sought to bridge the gap between conscious intention and subconscious programming.
THE APPROACH
Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, and mind-body awareness, PSYCH-K® provides practical tools for lasting personal change without relying on willpower or lengthy analysis.
TODAY
Practised by thousands of facilitators worldwide through the PSYCH-K® Centre International.

Does PSYCH-K® work?
What the research and evidence show
This is a fair question — and one worth answering honestly.
PSYCH-K® is a facilitated process designed to help shift subconscious beliefs that may be limiting how you think, feel, and act.
Understanding what the evidence actually shows — and what it doesn't — helps you make an informed decision before booking a session.
WHAT THE RESEARCH EXPLORES
Brain activity during PSYCH-K® sessions
The most referenced study on PSYCH-K® was conducted by neuroscientist Jeffrey L. Fannin, Ph.D., and PSYCH-K® founder Robert M. Williams, M.A. Using quantitative EEG (QEEG) brain imaging, they measured brain activity before and after PSYCH-K® sessions and observed increased whole-brain coherence — a state in which both hemispheres of the brain communicate more effectively.
This is significant because whole-brain coherence is associated with reduced stress responses, greater cognitive flexibility, and increased openness to new patterns of thinking. In other words, the brain enters a more receptive state — which is precisely the condition PSYCH-K® works to create in order to support belief change.
This research does not claim that PSYCH-K® cures or treats any condition. What it suggests is that the method produces measurable shifts in brain activity consistent with the kind of subconscious change it is designed to facilitate.
The neuroscience of cross-hemispheric communication
Independent of PSYCH-K® research, neuroscience continues to deepen our understanding of why bilateral brain integration matters.
A 2024 review published in Neuron — one of the world's leading neuroscience journals — confirmed that cross-hemispheric communication plays a central role in how the brain processes, learns, and adapts. Notably, the research found that these interactions are not fixed: they are shaped by learning and experience, supporting the idea that the brain remains open to change throughout life.
This is the science that makes the whole-brain state meaningful — not just as a concept, but as a measurable, dynamic condition the brain can access.
The Scientific Foundations
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
The subconscious mind
The subconscious mind's role in behaviour is widely documented. Research consistently shows that the vast majority of our thoughts, reactions, and decisions are driven by patterns operating below conscious awareness — not by deliberate, rational choice. Approaches that work directly with the subconscious address change at a deeper level.
MIND-BODY CONNECTION
Thoughts that become biology
The well-documented link between mental and emotional states and their physical effects on the body, studied in fields such as psychoneuroimmunology and somatic therapy is central to how PSYCH-K® works. It uses the body as a feedback system through muscle testing, which reflects nervous system responses rather than physical strength alone.
NEUROSCIENCE
The two brain hemispheres
The brain has two hemispheres that process information differently. PSYCH-K® facilitates what is known as the Whole Brain State — when both hemispheres communicate more freely. This reduces resistance to change and makes the subconscious more accessible.
BILATERAL ACTIVATION
Both sides, working together
One of the ways PSYCH-K® creates the Whole-Brain State is through specific body positions — such as crossing the wrists and ankles over the body's midline. This activates cross-lateral neural pathways that connect the left and right hemispheres, increasing integration between them.
The same principle underlies EMDR (bilateral eye movements) and EFT (bilateral tapping on meridian points): when both sides of the brain are engaged simultaneously, it enters a more receptive state — less defended, more open to change.
NEUROPLASTICITY
The brain can change
The brain's lifelong ability to form new neural pathways and update existing patterns is the foundation of any lasting belief or behaviour change. PSYCH-K® works with the brain in an integrated, receptive state that supports this natural capacity.
What to expect realistically
Results vary. Some people notice shifts after a single session; others find that meaningful change unfolds gradually over several sessions as new beliefs are integrated into daily life. PSYCH-K® creates the internal conditions for change — the real-world results depend on how those new beliefs are applied and practised.
PSYCH-K® is not a substitute for medical care, psychotherapy, or mental health treatment, and is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition. It works best alongside a broader commitment to personal growth.
What it can offer is a structured, gentle, and evidence-informed process for shifting the subconscious patterns that often keep people stuck — even when they understand, intellectually, what they want to change.
Common Questions
1 / What is the Whole-Brain State?
The Whole-Brain State refers to a condition of increased coherence between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
When both hemispheres communicate more freely, the subconscious becomes more receptive to new beliefs.
PSYCH-K® uses specific processes to facilitate this state — which is why results can feel different from conscious-based approaches like affirmations or analysis.
2 / What is muscle testing?
Muscle testing is used as a feedback tool during a PSYCH-K® session. It reflects the nervous system's response to a statement or belief — not physical strength.
It allows the facilitator to communicate with the subconscious in a way that bypasses conscious filtering.
3 / Where does PSYCH-K® fit within energy psychology?
Energy psychology is an umbrella term for approaches that work with the subconscious mind and the body's systems to facilitate belief and behaviour change — EFT, NET, EMDR, and others fall within this family. PSYCH-K® is one of them.
What distinguishes it is its specific focus on subconscious belief change through the Whole-Brain State, using muscle testing as a feedback tool to confirm shifts — rather than targeting symptoms, trauma processing, or meridian tapping.
It is designed specifically for identifying and transforming the limiting beliefs driving repeating patterns.
